10 Things I miss about being 10 years old

1. Books were so magical it was like being transported to another time and place.

2. Keeping fit was easy especially when I played games in the road everyday: 3 sticks, dodgeball, hopscotch, skipping rope, cartwheels, hand stands, the list is endless.

3. Board games, pillow fights and building blanket castles that kept me entertained for hours.

4. Old school tv games: Tetris, Islander, Bomberman, Super Mario Bros. (at least now I know Mario and Luigi are Italian) – I find Playstation, Xbox’s and Wii’s a bit overwhelming.

5. Not worrying about my sugar intake: toffee apples, candy floss, curly cones.

6. I wasn’t always sarcastic and cynical well not until after I reached the age of 12.

7. The ability to survive without a cellphone in fact not even knowing what a cellphone is.

8. Having a cute 4-year-old brother who at that time didn’t annoy me as he does now at the age of 23.

9. Any family outing was like an adventure to unknown lands just waiting to be discovered.

10. An unshakeable belief that my mother and grandmother could do anything, invincible pillars of strength with a multitude of superpowers.

Circa 1982 – the year I was born

The year Ozzie Osbourne bit off the head of a live bat onstage also happens to be the year I was born, surely a sign of great things to come.

The 80’s was the era when Madonna and Michael Jackson reigned as pop royalty and also the decade when John Lennon and Bob Marley died.

Films that came out in the 80’s included E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Start Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the future, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Rambo, Terminator and Nightmare on Elm Street.

TV shows from the 80’s were The A-team, Knight Rider, MacGuyver, Magnum P.I., Miami Vice, The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Who’s the boss?, Married with children, Quantum Leap, 21 Jump Street, The Cosby Show, Full House, Murder She Wrote as well as soap operas Dallas and Dynasty.

MTV was launched in 1981.

Popular children’s cartoons such as The Smurfs, Bravestar, Thundercats, Voltron, Transformers, Masters of the Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles are just some of the shows I watched whilst growing up.

Italy won FIFA world cup 1982 in Spain and Argentina won FIFA world cup 1986 in Mexico. Liverpool FC was the most successful club side of the era, becoming English champions on six occasions (1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1988) WHERE OH WHERE DID IT ALL GO WRONG FOR THEM?

Popular video games from the 80’s included Pac-man, Tetris, Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros.(which I sometimes still play). Playstation games are just way too hard for my poor 16-bit brain

Many fashion trends and faux pas were born in this decade: Ray-ban aviators and wayfarers (people are still rocking these), shoulder pads, acid wash jeans, leggings, leg warmers, off-the-shoulder t-shirts, miniskirts, jumpsuits, headbands – it’s actually amazing to see how most of these fashion items are current trends.

So don’t let anyone tell you nothing cool came outta the eighties – just look at me, living proof.
