I was quite disappointed in the movie but the book I am David written by Anne Holm is a beautifully told story about a young boy’s journey home.
After having grown up in a concentration camp and knowing no other life David is helped by one of the guards and given the opportunity to escape. With the aid of a compass he must travel across Europe heading towards Denmark to find his mother. He has one advantage: he is able to speak many languages which he learnt from the different prisoners in the concentration camp.
Once outside in the real world David experiences and discovers many things for the first time, you have to keep in mind that he knows no other sounds, colours, tastes or smells other than what he was exposed to in the concentration camp. He has never heard laughter without malice. He does not know how to smile. He falls in love for the first time. His naivety as well as his distrust towards people will keep you captivated from chapter one.
David’s journey home is filled with heartache and hope – a must read.
